Project report

Numerical acoustics for the assessment of turbocharger noise

Back

As sound emissions, such as engine noise or tire rolling noise, are continuously decreasing in cars, other sound generators are becoming more prominent. In some of these sound generators, including turbochargers, flow-induced noise is the primary source of noise. A pragmatic modeling methodology based on acoustic analogies for predicting the sound field is presented using the example of a BorgWarner turbocharger.

  • Derivation of aeroacoustic sources from the flow field

  • Use of CFD General Notation System (cgns) and Boundary Element Method (BEM)

  • Early knowledge of simulated noise emission

  • Potential for reduced development times and costs

  • Analysis of various acoustic effects and influence on sound radiation
