As a full-service providerin the field of acoustics, we optimize the sound emissions of your products and systems and develop effective solutions to reduce sound radiation.

We combine measurement technology with calculation methods to guarantee the best possible (or required) accuracy of the results. We provide you with realistic and practicable suggestions for action.

Transition from structure-borne sound to airborne sound

Transfer path analysis for the optimization of acoustic properties

How do you subsequently influence the acoustics of a product, especially if essential components in the design can no longer be changed? You can get answers with a transfer path analysis. Here, the sound is broken down into fields of action that you can influence in a targeted manner.

Structure-borne sound path

Noise transmitted or generated by component vibrations can be eliminated by decoupling, for example. The challenge is to ensure that the decoupled modules are securely mounted and safe. If possible, we first measure the noise generation on the actual components. We then develop solutions by calculating and evaluating variants.

Airborne sound path

Sound transmitted through the air is contained, for example, by acoustically effective enclosures (encapsulation). It is not enough to simply build an arbitrary housing around the component. A large number of parameters must be taken into account and adapted to the scenario so that an enclosure provides effective acoustic insulation.

Improvingthe acoustics of series products

Story: Quiet fully automatic coffee machines

How can you influence the acoustics of a product retrospectively if essential components and parts in the design can no longer be changed? Novicos provided the answer for the fully automatic coffee machine division at Miele. Our team dismantled and analyzed the machine, carried out a transfer path analysis and calculated various possible solutions. Novicos then built a physical prototype to prove that the calculations were correct.

Optimization of the perceived sound quality

Not all sound is the same. We analyze the sound characteristics in order to better understand the acoustic properties of the sound sources and the effective environment. This knowledge enables tailor-made optimization measures for comfort and the human perception of sound. Depending on the application, we take the following aspects into account:

  • Sound source characteristics (frequency, amplitude, spectral composition)

  • Sound propagation characteristics (sound velocity, sound pressure, directional effect)

  • Room acoustic characteristics (room acoustics, reverberation time, sound absorption and reflection)

Total sound pressure level

Prediction of sound pressure as a basis for decision-making

The total sound pressure level is a value for evaluating and comparing operating noise levels. The higher the management level or the more inhomogeneous the team, the more relevant it becomes. This value is also relevant for the certification of products for compliance with legal guidelines and standards. We design measurements in such a way that the data collected provides the most helpful basis for decisions on how to proceed. We are happy to provide technical support for your project and deliver solution approaches and concepts to achieve your goals. On request, we can also take legal standards into account. For the pure DIN/ISO certification of end products without optimization requirements, we will be happy to refer you to a partner with a correspondingly standardized process.

Insulation materials

If the containment of a noise source is more economical or more sensible than its removal, we offer you comprehensive advice on the optimal use of insulation materials. Novicos advises you on material selection, design and the integration of insulation materials. We carry out acoustic measurements, calculate possible solutions and make predictions about the effectiveness of the insulation. Specifically, we support you as follows:

  • Sound transmission

Measurement of the transmission loss (TL) in the reverberation chamber with subsequent calculation of relevant values for sound transmission.

  • Absorption

Acoustic characterization by measuring the absorption in the impedance tube. Project example: Aerogels

  • Reflection

We determine the proportion of reflected sound from insulating materials by measuring it in an impedance tube or using a calculation model.

Measurement and simulation

Our answer for reliable decision-making

Since our foundation, we have pursued the concept of intelligently combining measurement and simulation. When we intelligently integrate measurements and simulation, this creates additional added value for the significance of the results.

Realistic data for simulations

By measuring forces and vibrations, for example, we provide precise and realistic data that can serve as the basis for simulations. This is particularly suitable for optimizing the acoustics of existing products.

Verification of simulation results

We use measurements to test the accuracy of a method for the respective application. We first benchmark the results of a simplified form against a comparable measurement. If the results are valid, we use the model for more complex issues that cannot be easily validated by measurement.

Time/cost efficiency

If an existing product can be measured, real measurement data for simulation models is not only more precise, but also more efficient to collect. When we develop solution variants via simulation, we use real measurement data as the basis for these calculations.

Interdisciplinary work

Multiphysical concepts and simulations

We record the influencing factors across disciplines and create multi-physical concepts. Our team consists of experts in acoustics, vibration, strength, flow, kinetics and electromagnetics. This enables us to penetrate even the most unusual applications. We work particularly frequently on NVH projects.
