Transparent noise barriers with high insulation

Expert opinion for low-noise rail traffic

Anyone traveling by train through a soundproofed corridor is often looking at a green wall. The fact that noise barriers have so far been more impressive in terms of their function than their beauty is due to physical reasons: transparent materials are generally not absorbent and, in turn, common acoustic insulation materials are not transparent. For this reason, a project consortium with the participation of Novicos was commissioned by the German Center for Rail Transport Research at the Federal Railway Authority to test the suitability of transparent sound insulation concepts in an independent expert report.
The result: it is possible to combine these two properties. For example, concepts in which acoustically effective interior spaces are created using multi-layered, perforated wall designs are effective.

Further contents of the report:

  • Testing existing concepts for their acoustic performance

  • Geometric influences of the walls such as their shape, height and mounting angle

  • Optimization suggestions and ideas for improved prototypes

For this purpose, not only well-known methods for sound calculation such as the BEM (Boundary Element Method) were used. Ultimately, Novicos' own software developments specifically for this discipline made it possible to achieve particularly high quality results.
